Post subject: | Security question |
Hi. It took me three days to finally get past the security question at registration. I think it should be formulated more clearly! What else could it mean?
I think "types" might not be the most unambiguous term - maybe "different combinations"? |

I too found it a bit confusing... 'canonical card combinations' or something like that would sound more reasonable to me.... |

Must confess I originally entered 2652 (52x51) but then realised the error of my ways. TBH, I think a question like that will help reduce the number of idiots that join this forum. No offence intended to anyone who is an idiot. |

None taken. I rephrased it to this: Number of strategically different preflop hand types in holdem? But honestly there are like 3 numbers to try... |

Like I said in my opening post, there is a plethora of different pre-flop theories that categorize your hand into types, numbering from just 3 all the way up to 10 different ones. So no, there are way more than 3 numbers to try. Also, for each number, it could be either the number or the number spelled out, especially if you consider the smaller ones. |

I think the question itself couldn't have been more perfect. Keeps away people who know nothing about botting and very little about poker. The formulation of the question was questionable. Maybe "Enter the number of distinct starting hands in Texas Hold'em."? |

The security question is clear, challenging enough and appropriate for this forum, imho. |

lol. I also took 1 or 2 simple guesses, then tried various categorization option (e.g. slansky ect.), to then take a minute and think about it. what was accepted then was the first solution that came to my mind when thinking about it myself, but spending another thought on it I came up with another number and would disagree with what was accepted... I don't want to list the numbers here, but I would e.g. treat suited and non suited cards differently from a strategic point of view. And then the numbers change obviously. anyhow, nice to be "in". |

Isn't the distinction between suited and offsuited already included? When I joined, the question and the phrasing were ok. |

At the very least one could read the hold'em wiki to find the answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_hold_%27em |

I wonder if I can find stats on how many people tried/answered right/wrong on this somewhere. Anybody know if that's available by default through the phpBB Admin Panel? |

Code: Anybody know if that's available by default through the phpBB Admin Panel? I think not. But it should be no problem to program this functionality via PHP. If necessary I can make it. Tom |

I also didn't know the answer had to google it and I played poker professionally, beating NL100. The security question was the reason why I didn'T register an account a year ago, because I was inpatient to search for an answer. |

There are 1326 distinct possible combinations of two hole cards from a standard 52-card deck in hold 'em, but since suits have no relative value in this poker variant, many of these hands are identical in value before the flop. For example, A♥ J♥ and A♠ J♠ are identical in value, because each is a hand consisting of an ace and a jack of the same suit. Therefore, there are 169 non-equivalent starting hands in hold 'em, which is the sum total of : 13 pocket pairs, 13 × 12 / 2 = 78 suited hands and 78 unsuited hands (13 + 78 + 78 = 169). These 169 hands are not equally likely. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_hol ... ting_hands It was a tricky question for sure but a good way to weed out people who don't belong on the forum! |
