Post subject:  HUNL 6BB Strategy
Just for the hell of it, I'm crunching a large 6BB HUNL NE strategy with an unabstracted flop and 400k buckets on the turn/river. Interestingly, it doesn't always push/fold from the button. So far, it calls with about the top 18% of hands and folds with the bottom 25% of hands, the rest it pushes.

Hi,

Very interesting. What are the strategy on flop though? It seems to me that calling only top range will give lots of information to Big Blind. Big Blind doesn't hit very often and because he knows button only limps top range, it doesn't seem like Button gets paid more from limping vs push. I might be wrong though, that's why it's interesting to see what button does on the flop and what big blind needs to hit to continue playing.

After about 1.6b iterations the button call range is down to about 13% and falling. You make a good point about giving away information. That 13% may be mixed between calling and pushing. I'm just looking at the average strategy from the button. It calls with AA 97% of the time and pushes the rest.

I'll have to wait until it's finished to look at the flop.

obviously it doesn't limp the top 18% range. it probably limps hands which doesn't get outflopped very often (TT+) and hands which would be a fold in a push/fold equilibrium. the strong hands harbors (very scientific term) the weak hands to make them playable.

ATo+ for example is most definitely a push, and if i'm wrong i'm quitting poker.

I don't know about that. My push/fold player doesn't know how to handle button calls. From the BB it assumes any action is a push and either pushes itself according to it's calling range, or folds.

hey nasher, looks like you bought a little bit of more RAM ;)

I understand limping big hands to be able to play more crap hands that otherwise would have been folded. However, I wonder if the use of different opening sizes is due to non-convergence. For instance, a 4bb open doesn't make sense as we are commited even when knowing villain only reshoves aces. I'd imagine that an unabstracted nash strategy should only call, shove and maybe minraise (this might be dominated too, but not raise any bigger)?!?
Furthermore, the 8bb/100 difference is huge for such a small game. Does the base strategy know how to handle limps? Here (http://www.daimi.au.dk/~bromille/Papers/aamaspoker.pdf) the authors did compute a similar game and report a minimal difference between PoF and unabstracted game.
Maybe one can test it without the issue of not adequatly handling limps this way:
case 1: your old strategy is always in the SB and PoF, your old strategy is always in the BB.
case 2: your new strategy is always in the SB and PoF, your old strategy is always in the BB.
Then one can compare the EV from the SB between old and new strategy.

As per my previous post, my push/fold player doesn't handle limps properly. The larger raises may be due to incomplete convergence. Or, maybe not. It is what it is. I make no claims as to the "correctness" of it. 8bb/100 was after about 30k hands -- it might decrease with more samples, although I don't think by much.

Which CFRM style did you use for the calculation? And one other question: did you try to evaluate the performance after learning 1,2,3,... hours to a strategy that uses a large abstraction (i.e., not unabstracted)? I wonder if having an unabstracted street is nice in theory, but not actually great in practice as the variance of the strategy finding increases a lot and hence we need way more time for convergence. So it might be possible that if we have a fixed time to learn - say we train the algorithm for 2 days - the unabstracted may perform worse than the abstracted one as the latter is converged more (just a theory, not sure if it holds true...).

Empirically, you are correct, I do see smaller strategies performing better when convergence time is a constraint. I don't care enough about this experiment to worry about it, though. ;) I'll converge it further, later, and post back the details. I'll probably need at least 100b iterations.

This is something I've studied quite a bit. I can tell you it matters a great deal on your post-flop assumptions when it's not all in. See my discussion of this in The Raiser's Edge. Also the EVs you should be comparing are the button's EV in the complex game to the button's EV in the push/fold game. That gives you the value of the extra options.

When you calculated your strategy, described in The Raiser's Edge, did you use static strategy on postflop?

I can't fully understand your statement "it matters a great deal on your post-flop assumption" as Nasher is calculating strategy which is not independent preflop/postflop. What I understand is that the strategy nasher is getting is something like "AKs call 80% push 20%, then on flop if you hit Q56ss then check 20% raise 80%, on flop A44 check 100% raise 0%, ..."

I should note, this was with a 15% minimum threshold on those probabilities. Anything below 0.15 was zeroed out and the action distribution re-normalized.
