Can I still rent a $5,- VPN without affecting his internet connection in any way?
Yes. You just set up the traffic tunneling from one (your) computer/VM to the VPN you rented. Other computers won't be affected.

Second, there has been a case of a guy that was reading codingthewheel.com, who has been warned by PokerStars. If was only warnign thou.

Hi,
How is it possible for them to do this? Did they read browsing history on his client computer or did they actually do something to get the IP from codingthewheel site? Or, was it someone who had posted a comment to the blog and revealed himself that way? But that seems a long and twisted path just to track down someone who might be interested in bots. I think half the players on the internet are interested in bots, if not to have one, then at least to know what they may be up against.

On the note of paranoia:

Do we think that casino's look at the number of connected entities over time from a certain ip range? Like lets say you were running 10 bots out of a hosting center. While having different ip's, they would most likely be in the same range. Is this a problem?

My apologies if I do not understand the proper way to conceal ip's or go about this. :)

Some investigation on 2+2 pointed to that they were doing that, yes, but after a lot of people on 2+2 have seen that as privacy violation, they have stopped doing it.

Coding the wheel released a project for reading data from the poker stars log files and also reading the chat. Poker Stars detected people using this program and sent emails saying they should stop using the program.

I completly agree with the vpn/ssh solution.
Make an exit node trying to sniff data isn't so hard. There not only the gvt who do that.
The only interest of tor for me is in case of censure, as in china algeria ...

I will also strongly recommend to use another pc for surfing.
