I just found an interesting article over at Coding the Wheel called How I Built a Working Poker Bot.

BTW, I love this quote: keeping the technology of poker bot building secret is like declaring that only criminals can carry handguns.

Quite nice article. Didn't bring me anything new but I wish it had been around at the time I started looking into poker botting.

I love the comments...:
Quote:
I cannot believe how little work there is in that... wow

Quote:
Heh, I thought about making a poker bot about 2-3 years ago when a friend introduced me to PokerStars, and poker in general. I felt there are so many bad poker players playing online that if I could just tweak a bot to keep taking advantage of good strategies, and set it to play 20 hours a day, I'd be making steady money. That and the fact that I'd always have it sit at tables where it has at least 400x the BB, so the variance won't kill it.

Never got around to it, mainly because I was afraid PokerStars might confiscate the money I deposited and maybe even go after me. Now I wonder, were those fears completely unfounded? Thoughts...

Quote:
Looks like I'm gonna have to go back to learning C++. Any chance of porting this into an Adobe AIR application?

Nice article. I guess we can even link it in the tutorials sections.

I wouldn't agree in the comparison botters-criminals of course, although that will help to motivate to lurkers why the author wrote the article, so that they read it.

The article was decent, and the picture of the computer setup was great! Loved the production-style bench of monitors and computers. Two chairs though, wonder if he has a partner.

Any bot-like behavior is easy to detect by a casino. DLL injection gives you a chance to defend yourself, though.

I'm surprised at how few people actually get busted. The bottom line is poker sites must not be trying too hard to catch bots. At least, not too hard on a low level.

The exception seems to be Pokerstars, which has just gone as far as banning ICM calculators - even ones that don't screen scrape - when you're running their tables.

This is getting a bit out of control, really making pokerbots popular ...

Wow. It seems the guy is doing it for the adds money, but I still wonder how this will end up.

The ones that need a "Botting for dummies" series to make themselves a bot shouldn't be anything to worry about. ;)

This is great imagine all the fresh blood of crappy bad bots that's gonna pop up soon.

I see them all over FTP already - shortstacking and moving on to new tables when they double up.

How I Built a Working Online Poker Bot, Part 7: Extracting Text from 3rd-Party Applications

Hmmm, three posts in one day. Why isn't he milking this?

I kind of start to lose his point of what he wants to acomplish with that, but the articles are really good and very educational in any case (although looking at the latest one, Timmy is the one to judge that better than me :)

I can't really see this series inducing that many new bots. As you all know, making a bot requires time, motivation and dedication. It also requires a technical background..

I am predicting that the majority of traffic flowing through those servers are comming from

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=free+pokerbot

Anyone who is serious about botting simply isnt going to be triggered by the series..

It really is a good read though!

There is "botting", and there is making a new bot. And there is botting with a 3rd party apps made by someone else, and there is botting with one you made. I have "been serious" about botting for several years and making money at, it but am just now exploring how to "make a bot". The article/series is very good for me, though I still get lost way soon! When I first started looking into botting, I was going to dive into WinHoldem, but a kind soul directed me to OPI, and, with hybrid profiles of mine, Jester's and letsdanceNL, was making 2+ BB/100 at the $.25/$.50 limit after just a couple of months - at ongame and stars! At paradise it was sick almost 4 BB / 100. Then the UIGEA was passed.

And as you all know, botting with OPI and frog or even your own made button pusher has it's limitations and so here I am. As I read through the various posts and threads I am amazed at the depth of knowledge and expertise of some here, and KNOW for certain they are running very profitable operations. But I also think that there is some of the ole "paralysis by analysis" going on with programmers. I feel that my lack of programming skill is both a curse and a blessing. As I learn to program, I will be forced to look at things from the point of what is really necessary to play poker well, and wont get bogged down in lots of details. Player stats and their utilization is how to really play poker well. LOL, the 2+2'rs hate bots, but do you think there is any winning 2+2'r that doesn't data mine, use sohpisticated table selection criteria, and play with some type of HUD? My bot is going to do THAT. Except because it is bot, it will be able to do it faster, and with more effienency than the best 2+2'r. In fact I just may name my bot 2+2!
