Hearken ye all and consider truly the import of the announcement of the world's first ever programmable open source poker botting platform for Texas Holdem, OpenHoldem. If'n thee has the inclination, thou may journeyest to http://code.google.com/p/openholdembot/ the purpose therein to retrieve and utilize the aformentioned code base for thine own purposes.

Considerest the noble history of the humble programmable Texas HoldEm bot platform, as verily, tis one that has roots in existing products as exemplified by WinHoldem. And indeed, tis true that OpenHoldem, in the spirit of simplification of transition, has providedest thou with tools for the conversion from the legacy WinHoldem platform to the modern OpenHoldem platform. If thou were to be enamored by specificity, thou wouldest find that OpenHoldem provides the ability to convert thine own existing master scraper profiles to ones usable by OpenHoldem itself, and also that existing WinHoldem "formulas" are 99% reverse compatible on the OpenHoldem platform.

Behold! Even now dost the developer team seek to provide the elusive 100% backwards compatibility with legacy WinHoldem, and afear not, for it is a truth that that backwards compatibility is a thing to be embraced and maintained throughout the life of the tool. Alas, but it is another truth that, over time, OpenHoldem will enhance and extend the WinHoldem feature set, and thine formulae will be certain to cease to have utility on the WinHoldem platform. For though it is known that WinHoldem established this space in the poker world, let is also be known that OpenHoldem has plans to extend the feature set of this space in a most agressive manner.

There are those amongst thou, perhaps of ignoble upbringing, that mayest be in considerable agnst when in consideration of thine true purpose of thy hallowed OpenHoldem development team. For even the heartiest of souls must consider the grief to the developer of WinHoldem wouldest this announcement be made. Reflecting upon the depths of thine heart, thy would come to the abrupt realization that this announcement only serves to further the strides already made by that honorable pilgrim of the HoldEm botting community. For it be true that the creator of WinHoldem dost have machinations in effect to adjust the poker communities view of poker bots in general. Those strident measures dost serve to procure the ultimate acceptance of poker bots on an equal footing with human players! This announcement of OpenHoldem can only be of the grandest assistance in the achievement of those stated goals.

It is thus with great sadness that we leave you at this time, but not for long. Assurest be thou that support communities for OpenHoldem will appear, it seemest, out of veritable ether itself, and also that a Wiki, provided by google, the most gentle purporters of open source code services, will serve as the singular source of tool documentation. Thine Wiki is invariably a work in progress, but shouldest thy visit the Wiki page on the google project site, it is certain that one will find updated information on a recurring basis.

Welcome to the next step.

What is the relation to winholdem? Is there requirement that you have WH to run it?
Feedback, anyone tried it already?

EDIT: Same post in winholdem forum, and in maxinmontreal forum, answers were
- no requirement for WH to run
- good initial feedback
- no trojans etc. from the first checks

EDIT2: From very thrustworthy source: this developement is clean. No worry about viruses, trojans, etc.

What sites are supported by openholdem? Is there any tutorial? I'm using frogbot and OPI and I looked at Winholdem but it looks quite complex is there any tutorial for openholdem?

-- Good summary by Nick Coldhand on the OpenHoldem matter:

Nick Coldhand wrote:
These are my ideas about this Openholdem thing. Posted this on WH forums as well:

I’m still digesting this, but after a first examination, I can see this, from a botter’s point of view (heh, now I realize that indiana told almost the same things):

ADVANTAGES
1. Ppro compatibility helps silver/gold events.
2. Should Ray decide to change business, a thing I always have been afraid of, we’ll have a chance to use our bots anyway.
3. If other people should add features to this open source project, we could possibly have a better platform using Openholdem, or either pushing Ray to improve Winholdem to keep pace. Hopefully these products will follow different paths, and we’ll have an healthy competition.

DISADVANTAGES
1. If nobody will add features/update this software, this will be just a short term project, as Winholdem, even if not at the pace we would like (lately), is an evolving product. Personally I don’t have the abilities to do this, and don’t plan to learn, so my hopes are in the botting community, which, without offense, has never been famous for sharing.
2. As I said at point 3 above, these two product can follow different paths. It’s fine to have an healthy competition, but also we will need to learn one more language, or the bots won’t be compatible anymore.
3. As it is now, Openholdem needs a WH license to work, because there’s no scraping platform included. If a scraping platform will be added, we’ll need to learn to scrape again.

NON-ISSUES
1. Price. I can’t see how saving $0.27 per PC/day can make a difference. If you have a winning bot, that’s a bargain. The actual advantage of open source is not depending on anyone for needed updates, but this won’t apply to me in particular.
2. Winscrape. As long as a person has one single WH license, nobody can stop him from using it to generate masters for use with Openholdem. This may be an issue for Ray, and I can understand why, but resolves in a non-issue, because there’s no way in this world to stop people from using this trick. About this, I think Pokerkid hit thecore question, so let’s wait for Ray’s answer.

I can’t speak for lab1, and we didn’t discuss this yet, but I think we’ll soon open an Openholdem forum, as we recently did for OHI, where users or developers can discuss it.

Personally I have 2 WH pro licenses, which will soon expire, and I plan to renew both, and maybe buying more, if the bot I’m using will confirm his good results. On the other side, I welcome Openholdem, and I’m sure the botting community will find a way to benefit from it.

So guys what do you think? Will someone add to this thing and share, or will it be an advantage only for who has the abilities to do that himself?

As far as I'm concerned, I don't do windows/system C++ programming but I may contribute with various standalone units. I can imagine that the most value I can bring to the project is in areas of advanced algorithms or advanced poker (game theory) functions.

As far as my projection goes, I believe some people will use the codebase to derivative own work. I believe they will eventually contribute back if means for that are organized. I think this will become more clear once project organization becomes more transparent.

But I support Nick in this inquiry - guys, anyone (both more regular posters and read-only folks) interested from dev point view - indication about involvemennt would be appropriate and will help not only from user point of view, but to the project itself and beyond that.

I think someone need to volunteer to write one. I can imagine that
+ sample scrapping profile
+ sample bot/formula
+ step by step do this and that
is what can make a big step for the wh/openholdem adoption by current non-users.

Like WH, OH has the potential to support pretty much any site out there. WH & OH are both engines for your bot, and neither have the capacity to play at any site (except direct connect sites, which none of the commercial ones are!) without the use of a scraper, which is basically a file which tells WH or OH where everything is :)

With the correct scraper for the site you want to play at you can play anywhere. You can learn to scrape for yourself or take a look around the wh forum for sources of scrapes for sale. The scrapes tend to sell for about $50 for most sites, though some are more expensive. Your scrape will need altering or replacing if the site changes its layout. Normally this is done for free by the person you bought the scrape from, as long as the change isn't too big, and if the seller is reliable.

Initially this will seem like a problem, Fbot comes with some sites, you click on the one you want, and you play there. Thats it. Easy, but very limiting. What about all the sites that it doesn't support? You could be playing at those right now, with far fewer other bots to bump into, just lots and lots of lovely human fishes :)

It does'nt look like the is much documentation on OH as yet, but this is bound to change.

Hope this helps

David

It depends. We still wait to see more from OpenHoldem.

Will OpenHoldem remain independent if they are hosted by a reseller? Will we ever have profiles for all casinos maintained in open source?

The best way to find out that is to see what happens if you go and ask them in the project forum above, isn't it? :)

I can only guess about OH-lab1 internal relation, but my guess is that currently it greatly helps to the project in its early release where a lot of issues and incompatibilities to WH might exist.

And here it comes! You can get your free myself@openholdem.org e-mail (and by this consider yourself as part of the openholdem usergroup).

You will be able to check your e-mail from here:

mail.openholdem.org

This is hosted by google mail, so it's 100% secure, only you and noone else can read your e-mail (I cannot too). This is standard google offering. The web interface look the same as gmail.com. It also support all gmail options (including imap).

Now, how much does this cost, and how to get your e-mail?
* The email is 100% free
* You need to have 5 posts in the http://pokerai.org/pf3 forum or to report at least 1 bug on the openholdem forum (maxinmontreal.com)
* Reply to this thread with your preffered username
* You'll get initial/temporary password by PM which you'll change on the first login

Enjoy!

EDIT/P.S. I will soon launch web based registration (request for username). It will not be radically different than from replying to the current thread (it will only make the things a little bit easier for me).
